South Melbourne Market , there is another popular market offering a large variety of fresh food, homewares, clothing, children's toys and much more in the Dandenongs.
Dandenong Market or 'Dandy Market' as commonly referred to by locals, has been operating since 1886 making it one of Melbourne's oldest markets. It brings together 150 different nationalities under one roof.
As the
winter season abates, the Market celebrates the coming of Spring with its Market Week festival from 6 to 14 September. Here's a guide to this year's celebration with FREE activities including market tours, cultural food and entertainment, and cooking demonstrations that your whole family can enjoy.
Dandenong Market Food Discovery Tour - 6, 7, 9, 12, 13 and 14 Sept
This popular tour which usually retails for $30 per person is now FREE during Market Week. From 11am to 12pm, you can enjoy a guided tour of the market with its rich history, lots of food samples, conversations with the market traders, recipes and a goody bag to take home. Breads from around the World - 6 Sept
Some of Dandenong Market's master bakers from Turkey and Afghanistan will be gathering at The Kitchen in Market Square to share with you traditional recipes for making breads from 9:30am-10:30am.
Kitchen Cooking Demonstrations - 6, 7, 9, 12, 13 and 14 Sept
FREE Kitchen cooking demonstrations are running from 12pm to 1pm every market day during Market Week. You will learn tips, tricks and techniques to transform fresh market produce into delicious dishes from the experts. Different cultural recipes will be featured at the Market Kitchen in Market Square based on the following schedule:

7 Sept - Asian Greens
9 Sept - Health Food
12 Sept - Korean
13 Sept - Unique Food Products
14 Sept - Citrus
Culinary Masterclasses - 7, 9, 12, 13 and 14 Sept
The series of FREE masterclasses led by the Market's experts will provide you with the art of making delicious cultural food. Held from 9.30am to 10.30am at the Kitchen in Market Square, you can enjoy a step-by-step guide to making fresh pasta, dumplings and even tips on fish filleting and food styling that will make your home dishes look like a Masterchef's.

Dandenong Market Trader Spruiking Competition - 13 Sept
From 11am onwards, the Market will be ringing with the sound of music. The melodies will be the boisterous calls of traders as they pit against each other in the Dandenong Market Trader Spruiking Competition. Join in this FREE contest and vote your favourite crier to take the crown as the Market best spruiker for 2014.
Full Moon Festival
The Market celebrates the Chinese and Vietnamese Full Moon Festival with a day filled with FREE cultural activities for adults and kids. Join in the festivities from 10am to 4pm including dances, mooncake eating and lantern making.
