Ever wanted to live the 'simple life' and then in an hour be back in Sydney? Well travel out west along Windsor Road, let the windows down and enjoy the ambience of fields (and cemeteries) until you reach the townships of Windsor and Richmond. Full of history and nooks where you can celebrate nature or quaint little shops, these are lovely little towns to explore. If after lunch at The Mixed Leaf in Richmond (complete with children's play area and classy service) you want to get back to nature travel along Castlereagh Road until you reach Agnes Banks.

Turn right and in a kilometre or two you reach the Yarramundi River. Recently under flood, the carparks are re-opened and you can pull in at the left and amble down to the river. You can cast a line or just plonk yourself and companions on a large river rock and enjoy nature. There are quite a few little rapids at the moment and it's looking good.

If you would prefer taking a picnic stop at The Richmond Fruit Shop and purchase from a gorgeous array of cheeses, sliced meats, delicatessen items and of course Hawkesbury produce.

It's all an easy drive and can be as cheap as you like and as inspired by Mark Twain as you like. My husband and his cousin actually did build rafts and float down this river.
