If you have 2 hours or more to kill while travelling in Townsville and you like everything about ships, the sea and WWII history plus anything in between, the is the place to go. Located on the southern bank of Ross Creek, on 42-68 Palmer Street, South Townsville, this place is just a short walk to city restaurants and other attractions.

established in 1986, collects, conserves and interprets artefacts and information about North Queensland's maritime heritage and history. The buildings themselves were interesting in that they had been put together to represent a ship. The exhibitions were numerous and divided into some galleries; Federation Gallery, Women's War 2, Seafarers' Gallery, Royal Australian Navy after 1945 gallery in Port Building, Yongala Gallery, and Model Ship Gallery.

Federation Gallery will give you insight into information about the Battle of the Coral Sea through the display of panels, artefacts, model ships and dioramas. This battle happened from 4 to 8 May 1942, which was fought between Japanese and Allied naval forces only about 885 km (477 nautical miles) north-east of Townsville. Another fascinating exhibit was The Women's War Two display, which provides a look at the lives of many women who lived and worked in Townsville during the Second World War. The most interesting exhibition for me was the Yongala Gallery, where you can find about the disappearance and discovery of the steamship Yongala through interpretive panels, a video documentary and displays of original artefacts, including the ship's bell. The Yongala shipwreck is still an interesting place for many scientists and adventurers to find out more about its mystery.

The exhibitions in the will also fascinate children and young people with their hands-on interactive activities throughout the galleries. Starting from virtual reality about Townsville Port, learning some sailor's knots until view though the inside of the famous Titanic – thanks to the advanced technology that we have now.
