The Marine Discovery Centre at Henley Beach is an
award-winning marine education facility that is teaching young people and the general public about South Australia's coastal and marine world. Their education program is a unique, hands-on approach that is not available anywhere else in South Australia.
More than
7000 school children visit the centre each year to receive education that directly relates to Australian Curriculum topics such as Science, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History and Culture, Geography and Sustainability.
The
Marine Discovery Centre has been recently refurbished and there's all sorts of marine wildlife to see, touch and interact with - Pot Bellied seahorses, moon jellies, Port Jackson sharks, Blue Devils, crabs, Moray eels, lots of different fish species and many more!
Each year, the centre holds an
Open Day for the public to visit and experience the aquariums, interpretive displays,
interactive models and virtual reality tours.
The interactive models are a fun and very hands-on way to learn about climate change, good fishing practices, the wetlands, marine creatures, stormwater and catchments. There are microscopes too, through which you'll see the sea and its creatures up close.
The Virtual Reality Headsets allow you to go under the sea without getting wet. You'll be amazed to have underwater experiences with Australian Sea Lions, Leafy Seadragons and a Great White Shark.
The Marine Centre has a special Kaurna Education Room (The Wodli), which features the relationship that Kaurna people have with the Adelaide Plains and the coast.
The $8 admission fee includes the
Beach Marine Trail which is a guided marine discovery walk along nearby Henley Beach. Visitors will also receive a free take-home beachcombing poster.
Bookings are essential. Tickets are limited and
bookings can be made here .
