Italian cuisine is one of the most popular around the world, and it's easy to see why with its succulent sauces, perfect pastas and crusted pizzas. Visting the Marinara Cafe and Restaurant in Brisbane is a way to savour the best of the region at lunch or dinner.

The restaurant is situated in Paddington's main shopping and dining precinct at 34 Latrobe Terrace just 3 kilometres from the Central Business District. The cafe is housed in the Paddington workers cottage style, most likely once a home in the suburbs in earlier years. The classic VJ walls, wooden exterior have been given an italian makeover.

Painted murals are woven throughout the rooms to help re-create that quintessential Italian look and transport guests to a little piece of the Mediterranean coast. The curving waterways of Venice are just one of the scenes.

Plant-filled terracotta posts at the entrance to the restaurant give warmth, cosiness and privacy. Add to this the pots of Pathos vine, otherwise known as Devil's Ivy plants, snake across the walls and ceilings to bring more than a touch of greenery to the interior.

But let's be honest. It's an Italian restaurant, and the key ingredient to a memorable experience at the restaurant is the quality and authenticity of the food. And Marinara Cafe does not disappoint.

The Menu
The food offerings on the menu have quintessential, traditional Italian favourites with a couple of surprises. We started, of course, with garlic bread (made in a circular, pizza style) to tempt our taste buds for more deliciousness to come. The garlic was not overbearing - just a perfect combination with the light, crusty bread base.

Pizza
What's an Italian restaurant without pizza and Cafe Marinara serves up full-size pizzas with delicious flavours such as Chilli Prawn, Vesusio, Napoletana, Vegetarian and more on a crispy base. So good. Great for one or to share with friends. Pizzas range from $20;50 to $36.50.

Pasta
For me, I was drawn to the pasta. I chose the Gnocchi Bolognese with a rich tomato sauce, which beautifully melded with the light and fluffy potato pieces. The little pockets of potato were full of flavour and taste. For a variation on the pasta theme, there's also Cannelloni, Ravioli

The meals are a generous serve, which only makes the joyful taste sensations last longer. Prices range from $30.90 to $37.90.

Other notable selections are the Scallopine with fettuccine, Al Masala, or Alla Zingala. Other members of our party had pre-selected their vegetarian choice - Ravioli with spinach. Past experiences had told them this was a winner, and again it lived up to its status as a firm favourite. There are also seafood and vegetarian options available.

Something for the Kids
There's also a Kids Menu for the bambinos with smaller portioned options with Italian favourites like lasagne, fettucine, penne and gnocchi. How good is that? Prices range from $14.50 to $19.50.

Dessert
Is there room for dessert? Always! The desserts are irresistible and tempt diners to finish their meal with a delightfully sweet treat. It's hard to choose between the selection of sticky date pudding, lemon pie with the white peaks of the merengue, a perfectly sweet and slightly sour lemon curd tart and the ever-indulgent chocolate mousse. Cushioning my choice of the lemon curd tart was delectable homemade vanilla ice cream and fresh cream. Light, creamy, melt in your mouth which left you wishing for more. Bellisimo!
