I am a freelance writer and photographer from Sydney who has now had five books published on fishing. I also write for the NSW Fishing Monthly, Visit the Shire, Fisho App & Tackle Tactics. I also like to travel and experience new things to do.

I started surfing when I was 14 at a place called Gerroa on the south coast of NSW and I use to walk to surf carrying my board. I couldn't wait until I got my licence so that I didn't have to depend on my mum and dad to drive me to Werri Beach when the surf was up, so that I could surf the right hander off the point at southern Werri.

Once I got my car licence the world was my oyster, as I could travel down south to places like pipeline in Wreck Bay and north to Noosa. Given this freedom to travel to find as many waves as I could it wasn't long before I drove across the Nullarbor Plain (dirt road from Ceduna to Northsman back then) to have a go at surfing the break at Margaret River.

Since then it has been thirty five years since I had paddled out at Yallingup - Margaret River and when the suggestion to write about the Margaret River Surf School came up it brought back memories of when I used to go surfing at every chance that I could.

Margaret River is a town in the South West of Western Australia, located in the valley of the Margaret River 277 kilometres south of Perth in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.

The Margaret River Surf School is mainly located at the pristine Redgate Beach, just a 15 minute drive south from Margaret River and as you will see their surf lessons cater for all ages and abilities from beginners to advanced. What's even better is that they are open every day.

WHEN DID THE SCHOOL START?

The Margaret River Surf School was started in 1994 by Lindsay Thomson and it was the region's first. It continued to successfully run for over 20 years with the hard work of Helen Thomson, her family and staff. In 2015, former manager and head coach Jarrad Davies and his wife Domanie Davies (who has also been a coach for the school for many years) bought the business to continue the surf school's highly respected and well-known reputation.

Now, with owning the surf school, Jarrad and Domanie are living their dream of sharing their passion and love for the sport with people of all ages and abilities. They take great pride in their professionalism, fitness and energy, as well as their highly qualified surfing knowledge.
