As the end of summer fast approaches and the month of March draws near, foodies from everywhere will be preparing their taste buds for what is quickly becoming the "unofficial" food and wine season in Sydney. What better way to kick off the celebration of food and wine than with the March into Merivale Food Festival. The concept, created by Justin Hemmes and his company Merivale, gives guests the opportunity to wine and dine at the growing list of restaurants and bars around Sydney for a reasonable price. The promotion will offer $33 lunch and dinner deals across all eateries and pubs under the banner of Merivale.

The self proclaimed "gourmet extravaganza" will kick off on Thursday, February 16th at 6pm with the March into Merivale Launch Party. Previous years have been free of charge however the growing popularity of the launch has seen Merivale cash in on the event with a $20 admission charge. Don't let that deter you though. It is $20 well spent, as it allows you to appreciate everything that Merivale's restaurants have to offer all in the one place. The price of admission will grant you entry to the maze of cocktails and canapés along the length of Ash Street laneway, before making your way up to the Ivy Room where the real show begins.

Restaurants to be sharing their signature dishes on the night will include Peter Doyle's three-hatted flagship est, one-hatted establishments Uccello and Felix, and other favourites such as Ms. G's and Sushi e. Chefs from each participating restaurant will be cooking up samples of their culinary masterpieces at various stalls throughout the Ivy Room, as guests scramble for prime position to be first to taste test examples of each eatery's cookery. Be warned that you will need to be on your toes as the food disappears faster than you can say "bon appétit". However, it is a great opportunity to chat with your favourite Merivale Chefs.

In addition to experiencing some culinary delights at a decent price, there will be 60 events held across 21 venues from February 16th to April 5th. There are too many event themes to name here, however some are too good to ignore. Lets start with the "Soprano's dinner" to be held at Uccello, which will feature five courses along with an alcoholic beverage, guaranteed to make guests feel like part of the mob.

Potts Point favourite Ms G's will be holding a multitude of unique events. It all begins with the "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Lunch" which will be at the top of every girls list. This is followed by "Milk Bar Memories" which will no doubt be the desired destination for the kid in all of us. Ms G's will finish up with "The Morning after the Night Before" brunch which looks like the ultimate hang-over cure and I'm told even includes a "hair of the dog" beverage.

The list goes on as the popular "Foodie Film Nights" make their return to Ash Street Cellar. Film lovers and foodies alike will feast on tapas while viewing some classic movies. Mad Cow also joins the mix with the "American Diner Degustation". This will be a must for all the lovers of everything USA, as American diner classics are gastronomically recreated.

As part of the festival, Uccello will also be hosting the "Time Out Taste Test". In each heat, five apprentice chefs will be cooking their finest dishes, as guests judge and vote to determine the Taste Test final. Sailors Thai will be rivalling this with "The A-Team Dinner", starring five of Merivale's top Asian chefs including the likes of Dan Hong and sushi master Nobuyuki Uru.

Educational experiences will also be in the offering, ranging from sushi classes at Sushi e to champagne tastings at Hemesphere with Merviale head sommelier Franck Moreau providing guidance. The "A Australian Wine Fair" featuring 150 wines from 25 regions around Australia finishes up what looks to be a jam packed event calendar for the start of autumn,.

So if your are looking for a celebration of food and wine, as well as a chat with the chefs and sommeliers from your favourite Merivale restaurants, then this event is definitely for you. My advice would be to book fast as events tend to sell quickly.

Feel free to leave comments about any events, or recommendations for any restaurants you may have attended as part of the festival.
