is part of the Mantra chain, which offers reliably good-quality accommodation. Mantra Lorne boasts possibly the best location in Lorne, on the site of the old Erskine House, and offers both hotel-style and apartment accommodation.
The apartments offered four-and-a-half star facilities. The beds were luxurious, with quality linen. There was a TV in each bedroom as well as the living area and the spa baths were lovely.
A few minor concerns made us aware that we were not in a five-star facility. There was a large iron burn on one couch, a few light switches were dirty, a face towel was covered in dust, and the porter supposedly delivering our door stops for the doors never actually arrived. Nonetheless, the kitchen in our apartment was well-equipped and we were generally impressed with the standard.
Families should note that all the two-bedroom apartments actually comprise of interconnecting rooms. This was fine for us, as there was one entrance leading to two doors which can be kept open to allow children to roam from one room to the other.
If I'd known the room composition I would have asked to be on the ground floor, as the doors to the beautiful balcony posed some safety concerns and therefore some moving of furniture to prevent my four-year-old from exploring the balcony to her bedroom. I would also ask to be further away from the Caravan Park next door, which can get noisy at night.
The restaurant,
Brasserie 144 & Bar , promised a $39 two-course special, advertised on posters in the stairwells. We discussed this special when we booked and were given a rough outline of what was included. However, when we arrived the special was apparently 'no longer available'. When we were eventually told we could have the special anyway we found it did not include the meals mentioned to us when we booked.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was also affected by a TV screen playing music videos, which somewhat ruined the ambience. Nonetheless, the meals were quite good, staff were very friendly and I should add that Brasserie 144 also provided excellent coffee during the day.
Activities at Mantra Lorne included tennis, a putting green and an indoor pool. Equipment is available at reception and staff were very accommodating. There seemed to be a resident flock of beautiful native birds which were quite tame and wandered around as my family enjoyed the putting green. By far the greatest attraction to Mantra Lorn is its proximity to the beach – with Lorne beach virtually straight out the back gate. All in all, Mantra Lorne is well worth a visit.
