Sydney University's Manning Bar, in Camperdown, is only a short walk away from Broadway and Central Station, and only a little bit further from Sydney's CBD.
It's nestled comfortably on the third floor of the spacious Manning building, with a wonderful dining area and view, full of chatty, youthful university students. Although this is the case, it is a public bar, and so welcomes all who come. It is run by the University of Sydney Student Union, and so is tailored, but not limited to, youthful university students.
It is quite popular for it's night-time transformation to a wholly good-vibe atmosphere where live music, comedy and other drama performances are regularly held, drawing different crowds who can enjoy it's atmosphere. The bar, however, is open during the day too.
The bar is indoors, but there is an outside, verandah-like seating area with long picnic tables placed throughout. A DJ regularly plays (usually modern, smooth samples) in the outside area, while a BBQ grills food. Looking through large, sheltering eucalyptus trees while sitting outside, Sydney University's Quadrangle and the Great Hall grandly linger in vision.
In terms of food, you can purchase from either the BBQ or pizza menu, both of which are large servings, and both of which are under $10. Drinks are quite cheap, too, considering the bar's aimed demographic are university students.
Moving indoors, tables and chairs are scattered inside a large, square room, filled with bubbly youth laughing and chatting. The far back of the room sits a stage on which the performances are held. Regular events include trivia and 'Theatresports', a popular event in which students improvise comedy.
