Well, it is certainly not as big as the Great Wall of China but this Great Wall in seaside Manly (Queensland) has a great story to tell.

Way back in 1933, during the Great Depression, it was built on a very steep hill as part of the employment at the time, for those people who were unemployed because of the Depression, funded by State and Local Government.

It is an unusual pattern of stone, which was quarried in nearby Lytton. The pattern of the stone wall is interesting, looking something like snakeskin, designed by artistic stone workers.

Have a look out for small figures in the concrete - there are figures of human heads, and native animals in the mortar joints between the stones. More information #heritage19 ">here.

There's limited parking in the narrow streets nearby but you can drive along Falcon St to see the wall, however, I recommend that a walk would be best to see it. Perhaps park your car and walk up along Falcon St to get a close look at the stonework but there is some construction and council work there so take care.

From the top of the wall on Wellington St, there are views out over the Manly Harbour and Moreton Bay.

(Another project during that time was the Wynnum Wading Pool)
