Coochiemudlo Island is a small land mass in the southern reaches of Moreton Bay, in between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. As it is only about a kilometre offshore from Victoria Point, this makes the island makes part of the Redlands.
It is easily accessible by passenger ferry from the Victoria Point Jetty, and a car is not essential due to the size of the island (only 5 square kilometres) and the flat terrain.

Sandy beaches wrap around the island's eastern, southern and northern sides, whilst mangroves cover the western foreshore. When you travel by ferry from the mainland, the island looks deserted as it is fringed by vegetation, when in fact it houses a thriving community including an abundance of wildlife.
If you've never been to Coochie, as it is affectionately known, this may well be the perfect time to make the effort!"Mudlo" is a three hectares private native garden including natural bushland close to the Jetty on the Island. It includes a sheltered amphitheatre which has seen a number of local community productions.
From July 10th to July 19th "Mudlo" will be open to the public, from 10 am till 4 pm daily. There will be guided mangrove walks each day at 10:15 am and 2pm.
At 12:30 each day there will be a discussion and demonstration about mangroves as well as guided dinghy and canoe trips.
Coochie resident and artist, Narelle Renn, is also exhibiting some of her works in the gardens, the theme being "Vision Through Mangroves". Her pieces include mixed media, art prints, water colours and sculpture.
Renn is passionate about the environment and she was awarded the "2014 Redlands Environment Award" accordingly. She states that the exhibition is about " raising the profile of mangroves in the community by illustrating many of their positive attributes".
Tea and coffee will be available from the Garden.
In addition there will also be music in the amphitheatre from 2 pm till 4 pm on Sunday the 19th of July.
Coochiemudlo Island does have a motel if you would like to stay longer as well as private accomodation, and a corner store for supplies.
The Island is the haven of both boaties and fishos and has a relaxed and family orientated vibe."Vision Through Mangroves" sounds just like the perfect opportunity to become acquainted with Coochie .
I'll see you there.
