We first heard about from a reader of my article Where's the Best Indonesian Restaurant in Adelaide? . It's located in Tea Tree Gully, which is not an area that we frequent. However, we decided to give it a try because it's listed in the Entertainment Book . Despite its distance from the city, it was very popular with the locals and we were lucky to get a table without reservation. Mangosteen is an Asian fruit and befitting its namesake, serves Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. During our visit we ordered the Clay Pot Fried Rice, Green Papaya Salad, Kampot Chicken and Bo Lo Loc.

A good way to start a meal, Mangosteen's Green Papaya Salad features shredded green papaya with chilli, lime, tomato and peanuts. The salad had a refreshing taste with a bit of heat coming from the chillies with the peanuts adding a bit of crunch.

Their Amok Fish has quite a unique method of preparation, with the fish being first steamed in a banana leaf before it is cooked in a selection of spices and coconut milk. The fish was tender with the distinct fragrance from the banana leaf and its flavour heightened by the spices. It can be ordered in varying levels of spiciness to suit your tolerance to spicy foods.

The chicken in the Kampot Chicken dish was cooked just right with the firmer green beans and capsicum adding a bit of texture and the special sauce the chicken is cooked in complementing it well with a hint of heat from the green peppercorns. If you prefer, the dish can be prepared with a selection of seafood instead of chicken.

Easily one of Mangosteen's more unique dishes, Bo Lo Loc had beef that was cooked to perfection with the black pepper sauce enhancing its flavour and giving the dish a delectable peppery flavour. The slices of fried garlic were a good partner to the beef with the slices of fried sweet potato adding a crunchy element to the dish. It also came with a serving of watercress and tomato salad to help balance out the rich taste of the sauce.

Mangosteen's Clay Pot Fried Rice wasn't presented in a clay pot as its name suggested. It's a rice dish with Chinese sausage and vegetables topped with a fried egg. The rice was still fluffy with a bit of 'char-grilled' flavour with the Chinese sausage giving the dish a distinct savoury flavour.

Dining at Mangosteen is a totally different experience from doing so at an Asian restaurant at Central Market. The restaurant is set in a standalone building with lovely landscaped grounds so on arrival, it felt like going to a friend's place for dinner. Inside, the place had a relaxed ambience and was buzzling with conversation from the diners. Limited off street parking lots are available outside the restaurant.
