I love the Christmas season and I especially love the decorations and lights. I do my bit with a few strings of outdoor lights but my house has nothing on some of the amazing local displays. Last year, as well as driving around the Perth houses, I did something even better: I went on a Mandurah Canal Christmas lights cruise.


My friends and I went on the hour long trip with Mandurah Cruises (formerly Bouvard Cruises). We drove down to Mandurah a bit early, wandered along the foreshore and then headed for the Visitor Centre where we enjoyed fish and chips at the nearby Cicerello's . The pier by the Performing Arts Centre where our boat awaited was just a short walk away.

Once on the boat with Santa at the wheel, we moved slowly out into the estuary and joined a long line of boats of every description.

There were motor sailboats, fishing tinnies, inflatables and jet skis all in an orderly procession and all filled with people there to enjoy the show. There were even a few kayaks darting around. Several hundred boats pass by most nights.


The first lights soon appeared and the 'oohs and aahs' began. At many of the houses residents waved and cheered. There was a neon Santa casting a fishing rod, leaping dolphins pulling the sleigh, flashing stars, blinking trees, curtains and waterfalls of lights, each house bigger and better than the last. The grand finale is a canal where every single house is decorated.



We sang along with the Christmas songs on the way back, shaking our heads at the amazing display. Everyone agreed that this was a unique WA experience and it would be the ideal place to take an overseas visitor.

The cruises are very popular and bookings are essential.
