As summer rolls around and food waste thrown in the bin starts to pong more from the heat, it's a good idea to learn a little more about what we can all do about it. City of Whittlesea are running a FREE webinar event which you can access here , on Thursday 17 September 2020 from 7-8pm. Learn how to minimise odours and what you can and cannot put in the bin, as it matters.

If you're a resident of the City of Whittlesea, you might already know their food waste recycling service has been running for a few months now and it's already making a difference not just to household bins but to the planet. Together we can all save waste going to landfill and put it to better use. Council has rolled out a food and organics collection service which will be mulched together by a professional composting facility so it can be broken down via a natural process and available to purchase as a soil fertiliser. All you need is a 240-litre food and garden waste bin which you can get from the council for a small annual fee of $77 to use the service. You can order the food and garden waste bin online or by calling them on 9217 2170 if you're a local resident. The Council run many other online events from exercising for older adults (till end Sep and here continued to Dec) , supported playgroups , free youth theatre workshop s etc, all running till the end of October, and a theatre event in the wind for early October. Environmentally related to this article, the next one up is the Great Southern Bioblitz from Sep 25 at 9 AM – Sep 28 at 5 PM.

Calling all citizen scientists, join the Whittlesea project in the Great Southern Bioblitz and record your flora and fauna findings to create a fascinating catalogue of information about the biodiversity in your community. Join an ambitious project to identify plant and animal species across the Southern Hemisphere by sharing your findings and observations of the natural environment in your local area. Record as many plants and animals as you like; the more the better.

You don't need to know the details of what you are recording or have observed. Simply take a photo and upload it to the iNaturalist app with whatever details you DO know about it, and that can be as basic as 'a bird' or a 'flower'. Other members can add detail to help identify it. You need to download the iNaturalist App , sign up and join the project 'Whittlesea'; and to be part of the Gt Southern Bioblitz you NEED TO record your findings between the afore given dates. You don't need to wander far from home; it can be done in your own backyard or during your daily walk in your local area, or you can head to one of our many conservation reserves, parks or open spaces (as long as they are within 5km of your home).
