When you think of what roamed the earth many, many years ago, dinosaurs usually pop into your head. But you should also think of the relatives of elephants - mammoths. Mammoths - Giants of the Ice Age is the current major exhibition at the Australian Museum and it's where you'll find out all about these giant, elephant-like creatures.

As you enter the exhibition, you can view a movie that puts our current existence into perspective - humans with their built up cities are just the end few seconds of the lifetime of the earth. Mammoths first appeared on this planet about 5 million years ago and survived up until just 4,000 years ago. It is not known what caused their extinction, but their elephant relatives are still with us and give an excellent insight into mammoths. Humans lived alongside mammoths for much of mammoth existence and hunted them for food.

Lyuba, a fully preserved baby mammoth and the highlight of the exhibition

The highlight of the exhibition is an almost perfectly preserved 1 month old baby woolly mammoth, called Lyuba, whose death is suspected to be accidental. The baby elephant was naturally preserved by the environmental conditions in Siberia that existed 42,000 years ago when the mammoth passed away. Lyuba brings a palpable realness to the exhibition that would otherwise be missing if it were only bones, artists impressions, and best guess models of mammoths. Lyuba (Russian for 'love') is the most complete mammoth specimen ever found.

You can get up close and touch many of the exhibits

You can get up close to the models and touching is encouraged for many exhibits. There are several hand-on activities for kids and while older children will appreciate the exhibition the most, the sights of the exhibition held the attention of our 3 year old and 1 1/2 year old for the duration of our visit.

The exhibition itself isn't huge, but combined with the rest of the Australian Museum, is a good half-day out.

The exhibition is on now until the 13th of May 2018. The Australian Museum is open from 9:30am to 5:00pm every day of the week.

Big savings are available by purchasing tickets online. Families can save up to $10 and adults can save $4. Tickets include general admission to the museum, so if you have never been to the Australian Museum before, an exhibition ticket is great value. Adult general admission to the museum is $15, but an online ticket for the exhibition (and museum entry) is only $20.

Download the Australian Museum app before you go for a free audio tour of the exhibition.

It's hard to imagine the size of these until you see them next to the elephant.

I've taken my grandchildren to this exhibition and its fabulous, so well done, no more dusty old museum, and the food in the cafe was lovely too!
Really a great day out, the children just loved it and are still talking about it.
