Northern Light Theatre Company present
MAMMA MIA! The Musical running from April 9th until May 1st. Directed by Ceri Hutton with Musical Direction by Peter John and Choreography by Kerreane Sarti. The Shedley Theatre is transformed into a Greek island and accompanied by music & lyrics made famous by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA. This is where our story begins. 20 years ago Donna Sheridan and her backup singers The Dynamos, were huge on the little island of Kalokairi. During this time, Donna spent some time with Harry, Bill and Sam. Fast-forward 20 years, Donna's daughter Sophie is getting married and she wants her father to give her away at the wedding. After receiving no answers, she finds her mother's diary from the year she was conceived and discovers she has 3 possible fathers. With this, she invites them to her wedding and along with the music of ABBA, the story comically unfolds.
Being the first show a lot of people have seen post-COVID-19, there was a lot at stake but as always, Northern Light provides more than a nice night out. They provide an experience, a step back in time, a night of high energy entertainment that has the audience wanting more. Leading ladies,
Alana Stepherdson as Sophie and
Robyn Brooks as Donna, were born for the stage. Stepherdson's energy, infectious smile and beautiful voice paid justice to Sophie Sheridan. Stepherdson and Brooks portrayed a beautiful bond and took turns showing up one another with Steherdson's renditions of 'I Have A Dream' and 'Honey Honey', which both sang with a lot of emotion to Brooks' breathtaking version of 'The Winner Takes it All'.
All the ladies of this show were confident, sassy and brought their own approach,
Michelle Davy as Rosie had the audience laughing and smiling through the quirky rendition of '
Chiquitita' but it was
Paula Cooney as Tanya in
'Does your Mama Know' that stood out most; the dance moves and the costume for this scene along with the beachside set design were amazing.
Leading men
Gavin Cianci as Sam Carmichael,
Angus smith as Harry Bright and
Ben Kempster as Bill Austin were amazing, very big roles to fill but these men did it with ease,
'Our Last Summer' with Brooks and Smith was very sweet and well sung, these two had great on-stage chemistry. Cianci had a great voice that was highlighted in
'I Do, I Do, I Do' and
'S.O.S'. The rendition of
'The Name of the Game' between Sheperdson and Kempster was beautiful, had a lovely father-daughter vibe and their voices sounded well matched but it was
'Take a Chance on Me' with Kempster and Davy that left the audience laughing, cheering and sad the show was coming to an end.
The musical favourite songs
'Honey, Honey','Money, Money, Money', 'Mamma Mia', 'Dancing Queen', 'Our Last Summer', 'Lay All Your Love On Me', 'Super Trouper', 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!', 'The Name of the Game', 'Voulez-Vous', 'SOS', 'Does Your Mother Know', 'Slipping Through My Fingers', 'The Winner Takes It All' and 'When All Is Said And Done'.
Another amazing show by Northern Light Theatre Company 5/5. Beautiful set design, incredible costumes and an ensemble of talented actors to bring it all together. Don't miss your chance to see
