Tucked away on Postal Lane, Mama's Buoi Vietnamese Restaurant offers home-style cuisine served in a simple outdoor communal dining, reminiscent of Asian Hawker places. Dimly lit, and water droplets escaping through the roof slates on raining days, the only thing missing is the aromas of meals freshly cooked outdoors and the bustling vibrant chatter of fellow diners.
The service was friendly and fast; we were seated immediately, and our orders were taken shortly after our full party arrived. The waitress answered all questions with knowledge and politeness, warned us prior to ordering of raindrops likely to fall on us and non-existent indoor dining should the predicted rainstorm arrive. We decided to stay – it is only water of course.
The menu options range from stir-fries and curries to traditional Pho and Bun, with entrees $16 and under and mains $22 under. Several vegetarian and vegan dishes, and almost every item has a gluten-free option, including the Vietnamese chocolate brownie!
I chose the vegan Pho: a bowl of vegetarian clear broth, with tofu and a variety of lightly cooked vegetables, and a plate of garnishing. Light and warming, this Pho didn't have the flavours of star anise and cinnamon synonymous with Pho, but the variety of fresh vegetables won me over.
Mama's Buoi Vietnamese Restaurant is perfect for groups or solo dining. Unfortunately, not accessible, and the bathroom is a few flights of stairs down, so you may need a map!
