Tucked away at the end of Daly Street South Yarra is George Calombaris' s latest gastronomic project, in the form of the affectionately-named Mama Baba restaurant.
Boasting flavourful Greco Italian cuisine, Mama Baba aims to evoke the sweet nostalgia of grandmother's cooking, yet achieved through more up-to-date techniques. The restaurant itself presents a sophisticated but comfortable vibe that is easy to feel at home in.
Mama Baba's speciality is the pasta dish, which becomes obvious as you descend the stairs into the restaurant and notice fresh pasta lining the glass walls of the kitchen. A peek at the menu confirms this observation, however, a few non-pasta dishes are available for any carb-avoiding companions you happen to have with you. Precursors to your meal are plentiful, and so are beverages, with an extensive and delicious-sounding cocktail menu available. An innovative dessert menu takes the classics and presents them with a twist, with the results being no less delicious.
Service at Mama Baba is competent and friendly, and if you're lucky, you may even spot the owner himself, who is cheerful and happy to pose for a photo with fans and foodies alike. Either way, a visit to Mama Baba is a delightful experience that grandmother would be proud of.
Mama Baba is open Monday - Thursday and Saturday from 5pm until late, and Fridays & Sundays 12pm until late.
