Once known as a peaceful iconic location, Malmsbury has lots to offer locals and visitors. The one and only pub is as you expect in a little country town - friendly service, homely and offers good value hearty meals. This town is now infamous for the mass youth outbreak from the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre on the outskirts of town. It's a pity because Malmsbury has a lot to offer those wanting to have a peaceful day in the country, not too far from the city. On the tables at the pub, you'll find decoupage of old newspaper articles about the area. It's an interesting read.

This is Malmsbury's only hotel is still standing. Like many of the towns along the Calder highway, they used to thrive as a drinking spot on the way to the goldfields.

When you stop at the , you're most likely to find some friendly locals in the bar and in the bistro. Their menu contains the usual suspects such as steak and chips, parma and chips, pasta carbonara, open souvlaki, etc. The meals are very generous and reasonably priced. Whilst it is not fine dining, if you like good pub grub, then stop for a drop and some tucker.

My choice for the night was the vegetarian lasagna. It was large, full of veggies and came with a fresh dressed salad. The wedges were excellent. They were very crisp and very hot with sweet chilli sauce and sour cream. The kid's fish 'n' chips included a generous portion of fish and the right amount of chips.

My brother ordered the parma. I think it was the biggest parma I've ever seen. It was served with chips and salad. My daughter ordered an open lamb souvlaki with chips. These never make sense to me. You just have to roll them yourself anyway and it never seems to work ... but they do look good!

Warning for those with kids – there is an out of place grab and win machine in the corner. Take plenty of small change if you want your kids to play or make sure you don't if you are discouraging the activity. We inevitably ended up with 3 small lollies which cost the equivalent of about 70c each! My rhetoric about spending the money more wisely never works.

While in Malmsbury, take the time to visit the botanic gardens and historic railway viaduct.
If you are on a country trip and want to try another historic country pub try Carisbrook . Run Rabbit Run in Castlemaine has a great value modern all day brekky menu (see review).
