Walking around my local neighbourhood, I saw a sign out the front of offering a free breakfast each Saturday to those in need. Located in Auburn Village, Hawthorn East, not far from Swinburne University, Mallalieu has recognised there are people in the area - particularly but not exclusively international students - who are doing it tough, and decided to be proactive in offering their support.

An example of a recent breakfast made available free is poached fruit, Greek yoghurt, granola and maple on fruit toast.

As well as offering breakfast, Mallalieu has set up a free small pantry - a table on which are donated non-perishable food items that those in need are free to take.

To help this worthy cause, Mallalieu is looking for financial support via a GoFundMe page. You can help out by clicking share-sheet here .

They are also looking for donations of non-perishable food items to add to the free pantry.

Another way you can support this great business is to buy their products. Mallalieu has both a cafe and a classy boutique, and their goods are available online for pick up and local delivery.

The cafe is offering a range of prepared meals, including mac 'n' cheese ($15.50), curry of the day ($28, serves two) and a soup of the day ($13.50). You can browse the full range of prepared meals here .

They are also offering a range of care packs, such as the Care Pack #1 , which includes a dozen 'green' eggs, 300g smoked bacon, 250g house-made granola, 300g noisette sourdough, and two x house-made soups ($45). Other options include a box of restaurant quality fresh fruit and vegetables for $50. View the full range of care packs here .

Mallalieu's boutique offers a range of quality clothes, many in natural fibres. You can browse the full boutique range here .

Mallalieu is located at 113 Auburn Road, Hawthorn East, and is open from 8am - 2pm Monday to Saturday. You can order via the website , or by phoning (03) 9813 1387. Free local delivery is available.

Free breakfast is available for those in need, front line workers and international students every Saturday morning, 8am - 12pm.

Get behind this local business with a social conscience, and help them help others.
