Picture this; a sunny, crisp Saturday afternoon, driving along the winding Landsborough Maleny Road, looking out to beautiful scenery. Up ahead on the left, an enormous barrel comes in to view and curiously, you pull into the parking lot. You have all the time in the world, why not see what it's about? This is how my husband and I first discovered Maleny Mountain Wines a few years ago.
Maleny Mountain Wines is a family owned business that is positioned on Landsborough Maleny Road just before you hit the centre of Maleny. The huge barrel is positioned opposite the Maleny Hinterland Visitor Information Centre and overlooks the Glass House Mountains.
When we first visited the winery we were greeted by a friendly staff member who immediately tempted us with some wine sampling. The staff member offered us a number of wines to choose from and made suggestions on what wine would match the dinner we were going to that evening. The thing I really liked about their cellar was that it was quiet and cosy but didn't have that stale feel of some wineries, where there is only a small selection and you're expected to buy some wine after sampling one or two.
The service that was provided was very professional, friendly and the staff member that served us was informative but made the experience entertaining. We discovered that, apart from making and selling wine, they also host cooking classes, group tours and a few people have used the beautiful vineyard as a backdrop for their wedding photos. They also offer free membership which gives you a number of benefits throughout the year, including specials on their wines.
We sat outside with our glasses of carefully selected wine, a cheese platter and soaked up the sun and the scenery on one of their timber outdoor tables. I have to make a special mention here and say that whilst all the wines were excellent, my favourite was the Tibrogargan Sunset which is a chilled sweet red wine which is a light and smooth finish.
I think that this is an underrated winery that could be overlooked unless you have been there before. My husband and I stop in there every time we're on our way to Maleny or Montville and the service has never changed nor has the wine.
