Holy Cow - a Great Dairy Story
With two house guests from China, a country where few people get up close to farm animals, I chose to take my visitors on a tour of the Sunshine Coast hinterland, including Maleny Dairies.
It is not far from the Landsborough-Maleny Road - look for McCarthy Road, on the left as you approach Maleny, and turn. Travel a short distance and you will see the dairy. There is plenty of parking near the factory.
Tours are held from Monday to Saturday, at 10.30 am and 2.30 pm, at a cost of $11 per person over the age of 2 years. The dairy is closed on Sundays and Public Holidays.
Everyone meets in the little shop, and on time, the visitors are made welcome, and the story of the Maleny Dairies is told by a tour guide.
The tour includes visiting and feeding some young calves and piglets, then feeding the chickens, before heading into the factory to learn how the products are packaged/bottled. There is a short video in a little "studio" with interesting photos and artefacts, and then onto the dairy where the cows are ushered into the stalls and the milking takes place.
