Just when I vow to cut down on sweet things, there comes the Dark Fairy. I'm talking about a decadent dessert at the cafe in The Grounds of Alexandria, consisting of glazed chocolate mousse filled with passionfruit jelly on a bed of chocolate charcoal sable. Topped with vanilla buttercream, edible glitter, rocks and horns, it's designed to go with the latest wonderfully-themed laneway installation.
To celebrate both Disney's upcoming release of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Halloween, the design team have turned things upside down from the usual bright and colourful to the dark and brooding villainous with a laneway full of winding branches, black roses and feathers made more menacing by an eerie fog and misty green glow.
A life-size pair of Maleficent's wings will provide a great photo opportunity with a competition in place offering a $1,000 Grounds voucher to the one that takes the most creative photo in front of the wings. Simply upload your photo to your Instagram profile using the tags @thegrounds and #thegroundsxmaleficent to enter. Terms and conditions can be found at the bottom of this page.
Capture your most creative pose in front of the wings and you may just win the $1,000 voucher
Come Halloween, a couple of events will also kick in bringing more black magic.
The Garden of Terror returns from 5pm on 31st October for children, where they can make mischief in the spooky forest up until 9pm.They can dress up in their scary best (prizes for the most creative) and enjoy trick or treating at interactive installations guarded by creepy characters before making their way over to the dance floor and rattling up the dead (prizes for the best monster mash moves). Spooky treats for dinner will be available from the garden BBQ with drinks from the garden bar. Admission is $10 per parent/guardian and the same per child. A family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children is $30.
A new event on 1st November is Fright Night, the first ever adults only Halloween party at The Grounds. The bewitching evening begins at 7pm when you enter the garden after dark, facing your fears with creatures lurking between the greenery when no one else is around. Raise some hell with trick or treating for cocktails, snack on devilish food offerings and dance until you die with a DJ and live entertainment until 11pm. Exclusive installations and photo ops with adult themes will be present and there will be prizes for best dressed at this night of pleasure and pain, should you dare to partake. Tickets to torture are $25 per adult (18yrs & over).
With bubbling cauldrons and horned villains, it's going to be a spooktacular Halloween in The Grounds' darkest laneway and forest of doom.
