The Straits of Malacca form a channel of water that connects the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and serves as of the busiest trading routes in the world, carrying up to a quarter of the world's traded goods. One can imagine that Head Chef and owner, Chef Tan drew inspiration from the name in the hope of similar blessings on his restaurant when he first opened his doors in 2009.

I first came across this little eatery through a work colleague, who described Malacca Straits as the restaurant his Malaysian parents go to when they come to visit. As far as I'm concerned, this is as much of a ringing endorsement as one is ever likely to get.

Far (enough) from the madding crowd
Although popular among the locals, it does not share the same amount of cross-traffic of its namesake. Malacca Straits is tucked away in the peaceful Quadrant Plaza on Mountain street - a welcome respite from the bustle of Broadway. It is not the easiest to find except for those who are in the know.

There is an option to sit outside facing the plaza or indoors. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with an eclectic mix of pictures of prints ranging from Emperors of China to anthropomorphised pandas.

Eyes bigger than stomach syndrome
The menu is generous with options and in price at roughly $12 per main. On perusing this particular menu, my dining companion and I suffered greatly from 'eyes bigger than stomach' syndrome and had to limit ourselves to the Hawker favourites.

The fish cakes as a starter were quite acceptable and easily shared with a generous side of sweet chilli dipping sauce, but it was the Roti Canai that caught my attention. The Roti was buttery and crisp in all the right ways. Not to mention the 3 options of dipping curries and sambal.

A proper Malaysian hawker meal is not complete without a plate of Hainanese Chicken Rice and Malacca Straits boasts one of the best in Sydney (in my humble opinion).
Overall Impression
Yummy Hawker stall favourites at (almost) Hawker store prices. Not to mention - they have partnered with Deliveroo for food delivery. A solid option for your workday lunch or casual dinner.
