If you fancy a gastronomical excursion to the south coast of India for a reasonable price then, the Malabar at Crows Nest is a great option for families and bigger groups along the North Shore.

The restaurant is inspired by the Malabar coast spice trail from the South Indian state of Kerala. The decor is welcoming and tasteful with elephant photographs and decorations displayed at the entry. The eatery is deceptively larger than it looks from the outside, sprawled over two levels.

We started off by ordering the standard Masala Dosai, Bangalore Dosai, Vada - Sambar, Masala Uttapams along with the Garlic Pepper rasam and Onion Bhaji as starters. Our food arrived quickly, steaming hot and in generous portions which was good to share around. They also do an exhaustive curry menu for vegetarian, meat and seafood options along with rice and naan options, which we never got to as we were too full.

They have a typical dessert menu consisting of Gulab Jamuns, Kulfi (Indian ice-cream) and Ras Malai with no vegan options unfortunately.

The service was quick and pleasant and, the restaurant seemed nearly full even though we were there on a Thursday evening.

Our wait staff also told us that they take bookings for parties and have a capacity of up to 150 people across their function rooms and restaurant.

We certainly left with happy and full tummies and will consider going back soon for another dose of the Dosais.
