REFINED is an exhibition of Katrina Newman's contemporary statement jewellery which will be displayed at the Antipodes Bookshop & Gallery - 138 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento from the 2nd of January 2016 and runs throughout the month of January, 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm. The jewellery is made using the ancient technique of cuttlefish casting, then refined into an elegant work of wearable art.

Each piece has a character of its own, ingrained with a special feature or design that reflects Katrina's sense of place and her relationship to the natural beauty of Australia. From the erosion of our ancient mountains, to the movement of the sea and oceans that surround the Mornington Peninsula; all this is the inspiration she draws from. Her work is of the highest standard and her pendants and rings are not only made displaying quality craftsmanship but are also bold statement pieces with a unique design.

Katrina herself will be at the gallery each weekend afternoon talking about the techniques she uses and the inspiration behind each piece of work. With over 60 pieces on display, you're bound to find that perfect special piece that reflects your personality and compliments your wardrobe.

To tell you a bit about Katrina, you could almost say her passion for jewellery started by accident when she was placed in a jewellery making class instead of the textiles class she wanted in Year 11. Not only did it suit her timetable, she discovered a natural aptitude for it.

Add an encouraging teacher to the mix and it's suggested Katrina enter her work in the Royal Melbourne Show's jewellery competition. Being awarded first place was just the beginning. Since then she's studied at the Canberra School of Art (CSA) and graduated in 1983 with a Diploma of Visual Art majoring in Gold and Silversmithing.

Later she established her studio at Gorman House Arts Centre in Canberra and had her first solo show at Solander Gallery in 1988. Returning to Melbourne in 1994, she explored the technique of cuttlefish casting.

Katrina joined the Peninsula Studio Trail of artists in 2013 and participates in 'open studio' weekends which is run regularly throughout the year. Katrina also sells directly from her bush studio with sea views on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula.

You can contact her via her contact page on her website to make an appointment to visit her studio. She also has a Facebook Page and can be found on Etsy .
