Support handmade wares made with heart
The Makers & Shakers Market heads to Canberra on Saturday 27 May 2017 and I for one am excited. As someone who lacks any artistic flair, not to mention the business sense and courage needed to branch out and develop something new, I'm constantly amazed by those amongst us who can.

You know who those people are. They're the clever, entrepreneurial types who can turn a piece of clay or timber into treasure, or a blank sheet of paper into a piece of art and make it look easy. I greatly respect their talents, and I love getting out to local markets of a weekend to see what they're doing next.

The Makers & Shakers Market is all this and then some. It is a curated market that brings together people who care about where things come from, how things are made and what they are made of. So not only are the sellers creatively gifted, but they're committed to operating ethically and sustainably too. I now feel truly inadequate…

The popular indoor market has operated in Sydney and Melbourne for the past couple of years and is coming to Canberra for the first time. Held in the venerable Albert Hall, you'll have the opportunity to browse homewares, food and lifestyle products from up to 50 sellers; all Australian artists and teams who create high-quality, sustainable products and operate with heart.

I've done a quick scout of participating sellers and I'm already thinking of upcoming birthdays I need to buy for and Christmas presents I could put away. I've got the organic eggplant and curry leaf chutney – made from unsold fruit and veg – by Eat Me Chutneys earmarked as someone's stocking filler and might treat myself to a gorgeous, colourful skirt from Made590. And if I'm being honest, the Canberra-based chocolate mob Jasper and Myrtle will probably get a visit. These are just a selection of the wares at the market, and coffee and tasty treats will be available on the day.

The entry fee is $2 (free for under-12s).
