Vertical gardens are popular in countries like
Singapore where locals have limited yard or balcony spaces. In addition to the
Singapore Garden Festival , this trend is also growing in
Australia as seen in many of the flower and garden shows such as the
Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show ,
Queensland Garden Expo and
Australian Garden Show Sydney . While vertical gardens are popular for balconies of smaller inner-city apartments, they are also excellent design features in big backyards. Irregardless of the size of yard or balcony, vertical gardens offer easy access to fresh vegetables, herbs and ornamentals.
Adelaide Hills horticulturalist Karen Montgomery will share insights into this popular garden design and practical ways to build your own vertical garden during an evening workshop. Organised in association with Laneway Learning, which offers small group evening classes that are cheap, informal and taught by practitioners from the local community, this class is only $22 ($12 plus $10 for take home vertical garden). Karen holds qualifications in Horticulture, Conservation Land Management, Training and Assessing and Small Business Management and operates Kspace Gardening Consultancy Services.
Held at Tuxedo Cat, you will become familiar with the different systems that can be installed as a green wall, ornamental feature or veggie garden both indoor and outdoor. You will also learn how to create your own vertical garden, what materials to use, the type of plants to grow and what is required to maintain your garden in great condition. Materials are also included to help you design and take home your own vertical garden.
