Who said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks ?

After fifteen years of declaring a vanilla perfume available only from The Body Shop as my one and only personal fragrance I have recently undergone a total transformation.

How did this massive change come about ?

Late last year I attended a workshop where my girl friend and we learnt how to make our own perfumes and colognes.

It was a fascinating afternoon learning about the properties and uses of the individual essential oils. To say that our noses got a workout differentiating the scents would be an understatement. Who knew that there were so many essential oils? Over ninety, in fact.

I've said goodbye to vanilla and am currently wearing a lovely citrus concoction that makes me feel better about myself in this humid weather - a combination of grapefruit and sandalwood essential oils.

Not only is this a major change in scent, the form has changed dramatically. My new perfume is in solid form, known as a perfume balm.

This means it is easy to keep in a handbag when commuting, and is quite acceptable if you work in an anti-perfume work environment as they don't "float" as much as the fluid type in the air. And no, they do not melt in hot weather.

Perfume balms are a combination of essential oils that have been mixed with a melted base, such as beeswax. The more conventional perfumes and colognes are essential oils which have been mixed with a combination of alcohol and water.

Want to learn more? Then come along to a 'Perfume and Cologne Making' workshop at the Australian College of Aromatherapy on Friday, 22nd April, between 12pm and 4pm.

No previous experience is required, and the college supplies ALL materials.

The Significant Other is not really the cologne-wearing type. However, he does sport a beard that would make Ned Kelly nervous and so I am hoping to learn to make a blend to "enhance" this feature. And I'm running short of my grapefruit blend.

The fee for this workshop is $85.00.

Parking is available outside the College, at Unit 3/ 6-16 Nile Street, Woolloongabba, and there are parking meters in Logan Road.

The college director and course facilitator, Gwendoline Ford, advises me that there would be several aromatherapy workshops delivered across the first few months of the year including spiritual aromatherapy, introductory aromatherapy, and a repeat of the successful 'Make Your Own Chemical Free Face Cream' workshop.

To reserve your place, or enquire about any of these coming events, contact the college on 1300 13 14 72 or email [email protected].

I think everyone should try a perfume balm once in their lifetime, and this is a great opportunity.
