Its official - Brisbane has one of the most expensive public transport systems in the world. But you can save some money by using a Go Card. Fares on a go card are 30% cheaper than a regular paper ticket and after nine journeys your travel is free for the rest of the week. This means that if you are a Monday to Friday commuter your journeys from Friday afternoon to Sunday are free. Make the most of this and do something different on the weekend.

[ADVERT]One of my favourite things to do is to take a ride on the City Cat . This is also always a hit with visitors to Brisbane. Stop at South Bank for the weekend Lifestyle Markets or for the kids to have a dip in the Streets Beach Pool. Get off at Riverside for the Eagle St Pier, with its upmarket restaurants and great views of the Story Bridge . Travelling towards Bretts Wharf takes you past some very impressive riverside homes and Bulimba is a nice place to grab a coffee .

A trip along the length of the City Cat route from University of Queensland to Apollo Road will take about 1 hour 15 minutes. This can be shortened by starting in the city at South Bank or North Quay. By using your free journeys you would save $3.08 each way.

Want to get further out of the city? Leave the car behind and take the train to the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast express departs the city every 30 minutes. Connect with buses to Surfers Paradise at Nerang for a day at the beach. For the theme parks, change at Coomera for Dreamworld and Helensvale for Movie World , Sea World and Wet' N Wild Water Park . The trip to surfers takes about two hours and by using your free journeys would save $11.82 each way.

If you are really keen you could even head up to the Sunshine Coast. A shuttle connects passengers from Beerwah Station to Australia Zoo and for the north coast beaches connect with buses at Landsbourgh. A word of warning though, make sure you plan your trip. Trains this far are not that regular on the weekend and it is a long journey - you don't want to get stuck there. A trip to Australia Zoo will take approximately 2 hours 45 minutes each way and to Noosa just over three hours. A journey to Noosa would normally cost $16.73 each way on the weekend.

Brisbane transport is expensive but you can make the best of it. Other tips for saving money by using a Go Card include registering the card so that if it is lost or stolen you can transfer the balance. Always remember to touch on and off and take a few seconds to check that it has worked. If you think that it may not have touched correctly, check, or ask station staff or use the ticket machine to check your history. By not touching off you will be hit with a penalty charge ($10.00 for adults, $5.00 for concession card holders).

Visit the Translink for information on timetables and how to use your Go Card, register and qualify for free journeys.
