Make it May is a month long program at the Art Gallery of NSW , featuring collaborative art-making projects between artists, their communities and our audiences, grounded by ideas of togetherness, creativity and reflection. Each Wednesday night and weekend during May, the Art Gallery will present a wide array of workshops, experiences, talks and performances for all ages, including the following. Entry is free to the Art Gallery and all exhibitions on display in May 2024.

  • Tell Your Tale by Emmanuael Asante - Connect with the natural world through a series of animal-inspired painting and sculpture workshops brought to life by African storytelling with We Are Studios’ Emmanuel Asante.
  • Rainbow Rock Mountain by Rosie Deacon - Create and contribute a ‘decorative rock’ made with everyday objects and recycled craft supplies for artist Rosie Deacon’s Rainbow Rock Mountain installation.
  • Ants by Polyglot Theatre - Take part in Polyglot Theatre’s immersive experience Ants where children can choose how they interact with big ‘insects’ and become part of their world.

  • In the Studio with Wendy Sharpe - Join Archibald-winning artist Wendy Sharpe for an artist talk where she explores the magic of the creative process in conjunction with her exhibition Spellbound.
  • Ngara pinta-rru thirri’laa (that truth while dancing) by Tammi Gissell - Experience a new durational choreographic work performed by Murruwarri/Wiradjuri artist Tammi Gissell, made in response to Francis Bacon’s 1976 renowned painting Study for self-portrait.
  • ‘Silent warriors’ and ‘Mighty Maddy’s mission to the future’ - Attend a family screening of the short film Mighty Maddy’s Mission to the Future, a heartwarming tale of Maddy’s brave battle against a rare type of paediatric cancer.

    The Art Gallery of NSW has a phenomenal amount of events happening year in year out, and for all other events, including events in May that are not part of the 'Make it May' program - see here . Adults might enjoy the Elemental brew with Gianna Hayes which happens to be in May and part of the MIM program. It's a ticketed event at this hands-on workshop led by multi-disciplinary artist Gianna Hayes. It incorporates both botanical dying and botanical ink-making to extract pigments from herbs, hulls, leaves, weeds, flowers and more for a more sustainable and natural way to dye. With so many events on offer, including concerts, art after hours, beginner calligraphy course, a film series and more - scour the website!
