Children's entertainer David Salter proves he has what it takes to be equally entertaining for adults in his latest show Make Believe - Children's Songs for Grown Ups . Having regularly performed at children's parties, Salter didn't need to learn a new repertoire of songs - just re-imagined them a little, and gave them a twist.



In this entertaining 50 minute show, Salter takes us on a journey through some old and new childhood favourites. Starting with a rather bawdy version of Rubber Ducky, we progress to My Favourite Things, sung initially with Julie Andrews-esque precision, and degenerating into something far raunchier.

This sets the scene for the rest of the show, in which no childhood favourites are sacred. Salter even has a (good-hearted) swipe at The Wiggles.



Taking a more serious line, Salter's version of Puff the Magic Dragon would, I think, meet with the approval of original artists Peter, Paul and Mary. It was so sweet and touching - and encouraged a bit of an audience singalong in the chorus. Nice work.

Salter's visitation by his 'inner child' is perhaps of the funniest scenes in the show.



In the space of 50 minutes, Salter demonstrates his flexibility and talent by playing no fewer than three instruments, singing, performing a credible magic trick and incorporating ventriloquism. It's pretty darned impressive!

On stage, Salter radiates a personality that suggests he is truly in touch with his inner child; I mean this in a positive way. There is a joy in all he does, and a seeming lack of self-consciousness that one associates more with children. It translates into an easy to watch, thoroughly enjoyable and relatable show. Outside in the bar, after the show, Salter is friendly and easygoing, appearing off stage very much like he is when performing.

Salter deserves a far bigger audience than he had on the night I saw the show, and I would encourage you to go and support him!
