Maiz & Mezcal is a restaurant that serves up Mexican street food and offers a range of delicious taste and flavours in dishes that you might not expect.

From the moment you step inside Maiz & Mezcal, the inviting surrounds signal that you are about to have an enjoyable dining experience. Featuring a warm red and gold colour scheme, it is easy to forget you are not in fact in Mexico, but sitting in an Adelaide restaurant. With three separated rooms, joined by large open doorways, the venue has a vibe that matches its brightly coloured walls.

This is more than matched by the staff, who are friendly and happy to help you choose if you are still undecided after perusing the menu. It is also worth noting here that I found the service to be fantastic, quick and efficient without making you feel rushed out of the restaurant.

Something to keep in mind about dining at Maiz & Mezcal is that you can make up a meal based on a number of small tasting plates. Having done this on a previous visit, I can attest to it being an all-around success, with everyone getting the chance to try a range of dishes. Also, because of the tapas-style dining, your meal can be as inexpensive, or expensive, as you prefer.

For my main meal I opted for the pork belly sandal from the specials list (shown above), which I would describe as pork belly served on flat bread, complete with a trio of sauces to add extra flavour. Served alongside (in an edible cup, no less) were sautéed mushrooms in chipotle sauce, which added a mild but definitive spiciness to the dish.

When it came time to decide on dessert, I selected the newly added flan, which is made with caramel and dusted with chocolate. Served in a small jar with a mint leaf to garnish (shown above), it was a delicious way to finish off the meal. Most of my fellow diners chose the 'helado con sombrero' (ice cream served in a sweet tortilla), which the owner was kind enough to show us ahead of ordering in order to help us decide.

All in all, Maiz & Mezcal offered food that was filling and flavoursome, an atmosphere that encourages you to stay and soak in the experience. Anyone looking for Mexican street food is well advised to pay Maiz & Mezcal a visit.
