This 5 star unique Bed & Breakfast sitting on the shore of Lake Mulwala, was named after the shape of its roof. It is one very special place to visit and one of the best B&Bs I've had the pleasure of staying in. The home's architecture is outstanding and obviously built to very specific wants. It exudes a sense of calm, light and cool, even on the 37 degree days when I visited.
On entry, the magnificent tapered central staircase which leads to the hosts' living area, has a commanding presence. On either side is a guest room, where one can laze on the bed and watch (and hear) the water lapping the edges of the back lawn. Each room has plenty of fitted wardrobe space, wall mounted TV and a want-for-nothing bathroom.
The large open plan living/communal area leads directly out onto the back patio where the wow factor really kicks in. The small expanse of manicured lawn rolls gently to the water's edge where the occupants of the passing boats wave their greetings.
Whether you wander out on the private jetty or just sit on the park bench and watch the bird life go by, there is such an over-riding feeling of serenity that you feel you could stay forever. For me, the Piece de Resistance was to stretch out on a sun lounge under the shade of a large weeping willow tree and read my book. It was heaven... sigh.
While enjoying the delights of Maison de Papillon, there's a good chance that you will be greeted by a family of black swans -Mum, Dad and four little cignets whom hosts Denis and Lynda have watched grow from birth. They visit several times a day and obey Lynda's commands without question... well, almost. It is fascinating to watch the dynamics between the parents and the siblings and note how proudly Dad displays the family to us.
Daily breakfast is hearty and there's plenty to choose from (even fresh asparagus from the garden). Denis cooks up a good meal and delivers it to your choice of outdoors or behind the floor-to-ceiling glass walls. You simply choose when you're ready.
If you like being near the water and are looking for a little piece of serenity amid the hectic schedule of daily life, you simply will find nothing better, nor cost effective than the stunning Maison de Papillon. It's just a phone call away. Contact Lynda on 0409 198 813.
