Hung is an eight-year-old boy who has recently lost both his mother and his best friend. Lonely and sad, one night he is watching a meteor shower and finds a crashed spaceship, containing an alien girl called Maika. Hung offers to help Maika fix her broken transmitter to send for help from another alien. In return, Maika uses her powers to defend Hung's home against a devious real estate agent.
Maika: The Girl From Another Galaxy is a fun-filled adventure comedy for children. It is from Vietnam (although dubbed into English), which makes it something a bit different for a lot of young Australian viewers to watch. While the film is entirely fictional, it's also educational. Hung, the young hero, idolises Phạm Tuân, the first Vietnamese citizen and first person from an Asian country in space, which could inspire some interesting conversations about the space race.
This film has exciting chase scenes, pretty visual effects, and wacky,
Home Alone style hijinks as Hung and his friends work together to help Maika. It is suggested for viewers aged nine and up, which seems about right. There are some sad scenes, and a little crude humour (farts), but it's mostly pretty wholesome.
