A couple of years ago I fell in love (musically speaking) with a cover of a song originally by flamboyant Swedish band The Ark. "The Worrying Kind," performed as Sweden's 2007 Eurovision entry, had been remade as an intimate ballad by indie pop darling, Maia Hirasawa. I listened to Maia's soulful cover over and over again, and then promptly forgot about her. (Musical tastes can be somewhat fickle when there is so much to choose from.)

By chance I found Maia again, on YouTube. It was an old song, "And I Found This Boy," and a lot poppier than her cover of "The Worrying Kind." Still, it had an almost intimate, folksy appeal to it; even though it was pop, it still felt like Maia was personally singing me a song, possibly in a quiet café. I ended up getting a copy of her debut album, Though, I'm Just Me, and almost certainly drove my family and friends crazy with it.

Though, I'm Just Me was released in 2007 and was very successful in its home country. You won't be dancing to it, and you might not even be singing along. Instead, the eleven-track album is more of a "rainy day" soundtrack, for when you're cooped up in the house. Maybe you're drying dishes or vacuuming, chasing the cat around or just curled up with a good book. My personal favourites are the groovy "My New Friend," the dreamy "Mattis & Maia," and the tragic yet hopeful "Say Goodbye."

You won't be finding Maia in your local CD store, so you'll have to go for a hunt online, either for a physical or a digital copy. Though, I'm Just Me is the perfect addition to any music collection.
