Queensland is full of wonders to explore. Some of them are historical, some are rainforest, some are outback, some are hidden, some are beaches and several are islands.

One such island which has several of these categories is . It is a short ferry ride from Townsville, which will get you across the 8 kilometers of water to Nellie Bay.

Some people come to stay for a few days or more. Others come only for the day and check out the bays, hikes and beaches that comprise a huge chunk of the island.

The bus system is perfect, meets you at the ferry upon your arrival and delivers you around the island several times each day. You can be dropped off all over the place for an amazingly low price. You can also drive, cycle or scooter to your destination of choice. Be mindful as there are 2 different ferries in Townsville. The SeaLink Ferry is passenger only and can be accessed from Sir Leslie Thiess Drive. Ferry is the vehicle barge found on Ross Street.

There are at least 20 bays to discover and by the look of them, you will want to check out as many as possible. If you haven't brought your own vehicle you can rent an open-air vehicle and tour in style or rent a scooter. Pick your favourite bay and way of getting around and come spend the day.

Or maybe you want to come for a couple of days. Horseshoe Bay at the top end of the island is inviting and has all that you need for your time here.

With accommodation like the Magnetic Sunsets Resort at Horseshoe Bay, you can bring your own supplies to cook your own meals. And if you really want to vacation there are several restaurants on the strip across from the beach to find anything from coffee to breakfast, to lunch and dinner and everything in between.

There are a few grocery stores to purchase food for picnics at the beach or taking with you on many of the island hikes.
And for your safety, there is an enclosed area at the beach protected from jellyfish and lifeguard supervised. With the hot tropical summer stingers an issue, your safety should not be taken lightly.

There are several other places on the island to find accommodation, Arcadia, Picnic Bay, or Nellie Bay all have places to stay. There are even a couple of backpacking places if you prefer.

Imagine being on this lovely tropical island watching sunrise and sunset, splashing around on jet skis, tube rides, sailing, and/or fishing. You can even hop on a tour boat and take a slow tour around the island. Or you can meander many of the bays and hiking trails.

There are at least 8 different hikes and many join one bay to the next. With the interesting, rocky terrain of the island, there is so much of it to explore.
