Magnetic Hill, Orroroo

Have you rolled uphill before?
Situated along Pekina-Blackrock Road is South Australia's only gravity hill where an optical illusion makes your car appear to be rolling uphill. Yes, that is correct, I've tried it and the experience seems real! A vehicle left in neutral at the designated spot will start to roll back up the hill when brakes are taken off.

One opinion suggests that this illusion causes a downhill slope to look like an uphill slope when the horizon is obstructed. But, I'll leave it to you to form your own opinion once you've experienced it. Could there actually be a magnetic force at work on Magnetic Hill?

This strange phenomenon needs to be seen to be believed. So, next time you're in the Southern Flinders Ranges, do take your car for a drive towards the township of Black Rock and follow the signs from there. Although the self-drive tour outlines an anti-clockwise route, I would recommend heading clockwise (from Black Rock to Pekina) for the best uphill-rolling outcome.

Have been here and done the car rolling thing, it is awesome, a lot of fun and quite amazing in that it really does look like the car is rolling uphill. Beautiful views around there too. Go, have fun!
