If you live on the Gold Coast and have never been to the Magic Millions or are holidaying here and are looking for a different experience, then perhaps the sale of young budding racehorses is just the event to attend.

The Gold Coast is known for its glitz and its glamour and where better a place to experience it than amongst smart little fillies and colts with character, at the famous Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. The 2015 edition marks the 30th anniversary of the sale that has made an indelible impact on the breeding and racing industry in Australia.

Approaching the auction shed, with its elevated stage ring, where bids are made and small fortunes change hands, the voice of the auctioneer can be heard, sounding not unlike a foreign language in fast forward. Horses prance around the outside ring, champing at the bit with handlers ready to calm them. As you enter the open sided shed you notice a fleet of men dressed typically in chinos and blue shirts, moving around the crowd, capturing bids with a shout. Most spectators wield the hefty sale catalogue, with pens poised to record sale prices. If you wanted to bid, you're looking at prices starting around $150,000. The largest bid I witnessed at the 2014 January sale was $380,000. Horse racing is not called the "Sport of Kings" for nothing. With laptops sitting on the tables, open and ready for action, cell phones are held clamped to ears and the bidding runs akin to a race commentary with fast and furious rhetoric, racing through the bids as only an auctioneer can do.

The Golden Slipper – one of the world's most recognisable racing trophies – was on display during the January 2014 sales, giving members of the public the opportunity to have their photo taken with this unique trophy. The Tooheys New Golden Slipper Stakes is the most important race "in the Australian breeding landscape". It's run annually at Sydney's Rosehill Racecourse (the 2015 Golden Slipper will run on Saturday 21 March 2015). Magic Millions graduates (such as Pierro who sold for $35 million) have excelled in the race, so perhaps you'll see the purchase of a future winner.

The 2015 sale has attracted a star studded line up with "close relations to many of the country's best gallopers" to go under the hammer. To view the online catalogue and view the selling schedule, click here . It starts at 11am on Wed 7 Jan and finishes on Sunday 11 Jan. The venue is the Magic Millions Sales Complex Bundall. You can also subscribe to receive the Magic Millions email updates.

Join leading trainers, owners, bloodstock agents and thoroughbred lovers between 7 & 13 January 2015 for the Gold Coast Yearling Sale at the Magic Millions Sales Complex. The hunt for the next Dissident or Amicus is on.
