My experience of Spain, is unfortunately, limited. One of my friends, however, has just returned from Madrid and given me a host of places to add to my 'must-go' European list.

Madrid is Spain's foodie capital and home to party-loving locals. With thousands of tapas bars in the city, and the gastro mecca of San Miguel Market you'll be spoilt for choice.

My friend waxed lyrical about the world's oldest restaurant too - Botín. It has been fully functioning restaurant since 1725 – there's no denying the Madrileños' obsession with the convivial art of cuisine.

Add to that a cosmopolitan mix of history, art and fashion and a nocturnal energy and it's clear why the city holds such intrigue

Don't miss the sculptures and artworks at the world-renowned Prado Museum, then cycle to see the tiny collection of lesser-known Picasso works at the Picasso museum.

Make the upmarket boulevards of Salamanca your Saturday afternoon shopping ritual before finishing in up in the boho boutiques of Malasaña.

I've a feeling Madrid is next on your 'go-to' list now too.
