2018 marks the centenary of Nelson Mandela and 25 years since the abolition of apartheid in South Africa. Melbourne is celebrating when it stages the first English language production of Madiba the Musical.
Madiba the Musical will take place at the Comedy Theatre for a limited season from 3 to 28 October. It's a soul-stirring celebration of the visionary leader Nelson Mandela. The epic show pays tribute to the charismatic icon and activist whilst exploring the struggles, racial conflicts and divisions behind his unyielding crusade for reconciliation in South Africa.
After an extensive international search, Perci Moeketsi will play the role of Nelson Mandela. Ruva Ngwenya will star as Winnie Mandela.
Tim Omaji, also known by stage name Timomatic, will perform the role of Sam Onatou, a young black activist who's arrested in South Africa. In prison, he meets the man known as Madiba (Nelson Mandela). Tarisai Vushe plays Sam's fiancee Sandy who works for the family of a white policeman, Peter Van Leden, played by Blake Erickson.
Madeline Perrone plays the policeman's daughter Helena, who Sandy asks to help free Mandela. Barry Conrad will star as Sandy's younger brother William, who falls in love with Helena.
