There is no doubt that Photoshop has transformed the art of photography; some may
argue for the better , while others will argue Photoshop has done modern photography no favours; particularity in the advertising world where removing
lines and wrinkles (and often much more) is considered normal practice . So it is timely then that the Bendigo Art Galley will open the celebrated
Made in Hollywood Exhibition , which features rare portraits and still photography from the
John Kobal Foundation , on the 3rd of December, 2011. Here you won't find any digital enhancements - just exquisite black and white and colour portraits of Hollywood icons such as Jean Harlow, Joan Crawford, Vivien Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Charlie Chaplin, Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and many, many more.
If you love cinema, you will love this touring exhibition, which previously opened at the
Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara in 2008, the
National Portrait Gallery, London in 2011 and will open at the
Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio in late 2012. For now, it is open to the public at the
Bendigo Art Gallery, until the 12th of February, 2012.
Some of the highlights of the photography exhibition include a striking colour portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, shot in 1948, a black and white portrait of Marlon Brando, shot during the making of
A Streetcar Named Desire in 1950 and a dazzling portrait of Jean Harlow, shot in 1933 (pictured above). You can preview some of these beautiful photographs at the
John Kobal wesbite .
In addition to the stunning exhibition, there are some accompanying special events, including the public lectures
Made in Hollywood: An Introduction and
Made in Hollywood: The Passionate Collector, a film screening of
Queen Christina (1933), starring Greta Garbo and a family activity entitled
Hollywood Glamour, in which children are invited to dress up like a Hollywood star and can have their portrait taken. For more information on these special events, please
see here .
The
Bendigo Art Gallery has had a stellar 2011, particularly with the popular exhibitions
American Dreams: 20th Century Photography from George Eastman House,
The White Wedding Dress: 200 Years of Wedding Fashions and the current exhibition
The Lost Modernist: Michael O'Connell . Plus
Made in Hollywood: Photographs from the John Kobal Foundation is just an opener to their first major event of 2012 - the anticipated
Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibition.
