Myself and my friends are always on the lookout for a new dining experience and we found it at in Brisbane's African Village, Moorooka. Made in Africa is one of the original restaurants in the area specialising in authentic Ethiopian food and Coffee.

I have visited this restaurant twice: the first time was for the Ethiopian Coffee and Busbusa cake. Ethiopian coffee is prepared by fresh roasting the beans producing a wonderful aroma and at Made in Africa it is served in a traditional Ethiopian coffee pot. When we asked the owner whether to drink the coffee with or without sugar, he, told us that Ethiopian coffee is normally drunk black but he often adds sugar to his coffee in the morning when he needs an extra wake-up. Also ask about the Ethiopian coffee ceremony.

The second time that I went to this restaurant I was with a fairly large group and we decided to order the platters. These include a mix of 4 meat and 4 vegetarian dishes served on traditional Ethiopian injera bread. This is a great option for even 2 people as you can sample a great selection of Ethiopian food. You can also order platters that include entrees, coffee and dessert.

Vegetarians are not forgotten and vegetarian platters are also available.

Knives and forks are provided if you request them, but guests are encouraged to eat in the traditional Ethiopian manner by tearing off a slice of the injera bread with their right hand and using it to pick up the food they want to eat. I don't want to sound like your mother, but please don't forget to wash your hands before eating with your hands.

Another Ethiopian dining tradition that was explained by the owner is Goorsha. This is where you show your friendship by picking up the food for your friend and placing it in their mouth.

Some dishes to try

Kitfo is minced beef seasoned with herb butter sauce and mitmita, which is a special blend of chilli and spices.

Another classic Ethiopian dish is Doro Wot: chicken stewed in red hot pepper sauce and served with a boiled egg. This is an ideal dish to eat with rice instead of bread.

Gomen Be Sega is sautéed lamb, kai lan (collard greens), onions, herbed butter, garlic and ginger.

All vegetables dishes at Made in Africa are vegan and the best one to try is Gomen, a dish of spinach boiled with garlic, red capsicum and onions.
