Maddison Cottage is a French themed tearoom and gift shop that is bursting at the seams with charm and character. You can find this quaint little cottage on James Street in Guildford. It reminded me a lot of the Cottage Tea Rooms that I visited in Henley Brook.
Maddison Cottage or "Maddys" as it is known by some is run by a mother daughter team. It opened in 2011. Owners Jan and Claire do all their own baking and have lovingly decorated the entire place with decorative items like tea sets, soaps, vases, old posters and flowers.
Maddison Cottage serves sandwiches, quiches, cakes, scones, savoury snacks, hot and cold drinks and High Tea. They are open on Mondays from 10am to 2pm and from Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am to 4pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm. They serve breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
If you would like to experience High Tea at Maddison Cottage you will need to make a booking at least 24 hours in advance and submit a 50% deposit at the time of booking. Maddison Cottage does not offer High Tea to small children and babies. Children aged 8 years and older are welcome to attend but will be charged at adult rates. They do not have space to accommodate prams.
Maddison Cottage can cater for bookings of up to 18 people but you will fall under their small functions category. The cost per person for a function is $40 (including corkage) and there will be an addition $50 charge for the hire of a room. People are welcome to add personal touches to the tables if they wish.
Please allow at least 1 hour and 45 minutes for a High Tea sitting. You can make a booking for High Tea Tuesday to Friday and on Saturday and Sundays. High Tea on Public Holidays costs $40 per person. The cost ranges from $34 to $38 on regular days of the week. Please ring Maddison Cottage to find out about booking times. Maddison Cottage prepares all of their food from scratch. The High Tea Menu (per person) includes a selection of fresh sandwiches, Petite Quiche & Vol Au Vent, scones served with jam and cream and three little sweets per person. You can also choose a beverage from their large selection of teas and coffee. If you BYO champagne there is a corkage charge of $2 per person.
When we visited Maddison Cottage it was a quiet afternoon and we were the only ones there. I ordered a hot chocolate for $4.50 and a plate of scones with fresh cream and jam for $4.50. I really liked the plate that the hot chocolate came out on. It had roses on it. It was a nice touch. I like places that serve you things on nice plates. I had lunch at a place the other week that served me food on a plain Ikea plate that had been taped together with a bit of sticky tape on the back. I was not impressed. My scone was piping hot and dusted with icing sugar. It was resting on a blue plate and came with a serving of cream and jam. The scone was fluffy and warm and very nice with the cream and the jam. I would gladly visit again.
Don't you just love the smell of freshly baked scones?
