Madame Hanoi is a sophisticated restaurant in the SkyCity Casino complex in the Adelaide CBD. The La Marzocco coffee machine has a lovely cherry blossom design - have a peek in next time you pass by as you can't miss it sitting on the counter. There is also the lovely mural on the right as you enter from the street. It's a lovely piece of art and sets the tone nicely.
The menu is really designed to share a few items, and the service person will no doubt tell you this when you're seated. This can be tricky for me as I'm not a big meat eater and usually I am out with people who are. But I have managed to find things each time to order.
Speaking of ordering, when the staff return to take your order they won't write a thing down. Instead, they listen intently when you order and repeat the whole table's order back to you flawlessly.
The first time I went I ordered the papaya salad thinking it would be sweet and refreshing. What a rookie mistake! It's a lovely salad with fresh ingredients but it has some serious chilli kick to it. I'm a bit of a spice wimp so I found that this definitely wasn't the right choice for me. But, I still looked forward to returning, a sign that the service and ambience is a winning combo here.
The next time I followed my instincts and ordered a soft-shell crab bao that came out on a jet-black bun. This is a lovely dish. The crunch of the crab with the softness of the bun, and a wonderful combination of flavours. I'm glad I got it on my next visit.
We also got a chicken curry, but the picture is not a good reflection of the deliciousness of the dish. The low-lighting makes Madame Hanoi a nice place to be, but it is a bit difficult to take a good food photo without disturbing other patrons.
Overall, I'd recommend Madame Hanoi as a good place for a few friends to catch up, or for somewhere a bit more romantic. While I haven't indulged in the desserts of fresh-baked pastries, these look like the perfect thing to share on a date, or to indulge in all on your own.
I have been here.....it has fantastic food. Two levels and plenty of room. You can sit at a table or on high stools. The high stools and tables mean your plate is closer to your mouth so less distance to go to avoid spillage 😂. Highly recommended.
