Sample culinary delights from Europe in infamous laneways
Madame Brussels Lane is infamous in Melbourne for its colourful history concerning brothels, opium dens and seedy drinking establishments. Thankfully it's somewhat more wholesome these days and is the setting for a series of winter night markets. Every Friday in July, Madame Brussels Lane - named after one of the most famous Australian madams of all times - will be transformed into a European winter wonderland.
This market, drawing inspiration from the charming European Christmas markets, will be full of food and drink stalls intended to warm up even the coldest of fingers and toes. The tantalising dishes on offer will include Swiss, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Turkish and Greek fare. Hot drinks including mulled wine and spiced rum will also feature, as will entertainment from the likes of Tanya George and Fleiss. You can even sample the Night Market's very own cocktail which is a blend of Ginger Mick gin, Le Birlou apple and chestnut liqueur, lemon, cloudy apple juice and orgeat (orange flower water with barley or almonds).
This market saw over 20,000 visitors in 2018 and promises to be thirty percent bigger in 2019. Madame Brussels Lane is located just off Lonsdale Street. The night market will be in full swing between 5pm and 10pm every Friday in July. Get yourself down there for Friday drinks after work and take your pick from Turkish gozleme, German sausages, Spanish paella, Italian Nutella stuffed doughnuts and a whole lot more.
