Take your kids globe-trotting in their own 'backyard' in this funny 60-minute (no intermission) musical with a friendship-fusing finale.

Based on the blockbuster DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR. follows New York Central Park Zoo's Alex the Lion (Jackson Hurwood), Marty the Zebra (Aidan Khan), Melman the Giraffe (Declan Ahern), Gloria the hip hip Hippo (Kristen Robertson) and, of course, your favourite plotting penguins (led by Rebecca Katz as Skipper) crash their ship onto your stage in this spectacular musical adventure.

The 8 to 18-year-old Young Australian Broadway Chorus actors are gloriously well-rehearsed. Fabulous bright costumes and make-up will keep your eyes riveted to the stage. The harmonies and choreography were worthy of the bright lights and big city of New York.

The zoo animals are captured, crated up and shipped off aboard a cargo ship to Africa. On the way, a mutiny by rebellious penguins leads to them being swept off the deck and washed ashore in Madagascar. The penguins were not as entertaining as I had hoped, but held their own with the lead penguin pulling off a fantastic American accent. The movie bridged the humour to the adult audience more effectively than this junior adventure.

King Julien (Adam Forgione) got some laughs while avoiding the crude humour and innuendos of the 2005 movie. The four zoo friends help the lemurs fend off a pack of foussa, catlike carnivores native to Madagascar. The foussa scenes were very well done, with rhythmic chanting and pulse-lighting giving an effective bad-guys but not too scary vibe.

Madagascar makes Alex miss his daily stacks of sirloin and porterhouse. He is a meat-eater. He eats steak. "Which is you," Marty the Zebra is warned. At one point, driven wild by hunger, Alex even tries to take a bite out of Marty's butt. This was by far a favourite scene of the audience (and my three boys, ages 7, 7 and 11). The run up to the same scene was my daughter's favourite, when the actors become 'steaks' in Alex's hungry delusions.

Overall, your kids will get a high quality show for a low price with a great message of unconditional friendship told by some inspiring young actors.

There are limited parking areas available; we chose the 'Eastern Precinct Car Park' at 375 Cardigan Street Carlton. We paid $8.50 for four hours. Transit and other parking information is available here: https://umsu.unimelb.edu.au/studentlife/theatre/maps . There is a candy-bar near the theatre with $2 snacks and lollies. The Union Theatre is on the University of Melbourne campus on the ground level. There are other cheap eating options in the same building, including a Subway, Boost Juice Bar, and a variety of other options.

Some shows are sold out, so you've got to move it, move it if you want tickets! A new show has been added at 11:00am on Saturday 14 July.
