Uni students these days have more sophisticated palates and Pizza Hut and Dominos no longer make the cut. Quality food with good value for money are the selling points for the cash-strapped uni students.

Mad Pizza E Bar is becoming very popular with starving uni students from the University of Sydney because it offers $12 pizzas and pasta, which seemed a good bargain for a quick yummy lunch.

Mad Pizza E Bar has a rustic and warm ambiance which is inviting and welcoming. The bare brick wall is heavily decorated with Italian prints. The large open bar is well-stocked with a vast local and imported spirits and wines.

This places gets really busy and crowd on Friday nights. Bountiful drinks, merry laughter and cosy conversations all happening right here at Mad Pizza E Bar during the night.

The pizza menu looked extensive with the usual favourites as well as some exotic surprises. The highlight of Mad Pizza are their Superthin bases and Healthy Pizza range. Decision-making was nothing short of a struggle given the mouth-watering options placed in front of us.

Our orders took some time to arrive because they were freshly-made. The salads were the first one to arrive.

This Pea Salad was well-executed with interesting flavour combinations. It consisted of garden pea & sugar snap beans with salted ricotta & lemon oil topped with poached chicken slices.
It tasted fresh and you could tell they used good ingredients. I was expecting something ordinary for a $12 salad and was happy to be impressed.

The Rocket Salad was filled with fresh, quality rocket leaves, shaved parmesan & radiccio. It was served with pine nuts & balsamic dressing with poached chicken. It was a very healthy choice to start off.

The oozy pepperoni pizza topped with roma tomato, black kalamata olives, basil leaves, Italian herbs and mozzarella immediately impressed us.

My friend took the tentative first bite and she declared that the pizza was indeed crispy and the flavours were good.

Soon after, Tuscano & Positano pizza made their appearances.

The Tuscano also had a crispy base with toppings of shredded lamb shanks from Victoria, baby spinach, red onion, garden peas, mint, fetta, garlic & lemon.

The lamb shank was so flavorsome and tasted very moist and tender. It was perfectly balanced with tangy lemon, feta and mint.
It was a sumptuous pizza and it was an instant hit with everyone's tastebuds.

Next we turned our attention towards the Positano pizza. It looked so appetising as it was loaded with a healthy dose of assorted marina mix, such as prawns, calamari and clams. The addition of tomato, shallots, garlic oil, flat leaf parsley & lemon certainly enhanced the taste sensation.

The seafood pizza was decent, but I found the seafood was just slightly under-cooked for my liking. The flavours were not as impactful as the Tuscano pizza. However the cracker-thin crust stayed remarkably crisp.

We devoured the pizzas happily.

We also ordered a pasta dish and we were pleased with this Carnevino Pasta. Thick papparedelle pasta tossed with flavoursome porcini mushroom & sausage ragou. The pasta also came with a generous piece of crusty bread on the side. For such a reasonable price, the quality is pretty good.

We love a restaurant that serve generous hearty food and as a result they will get loyal repeat customers.

If you are in Newtown, I recommend coming here for lunch to take advantage of Mad's great affordable lunch deals. Currently, Mad is offering $12 pizzas, pastas and salads.

But bear in mind, the lunch special pizzas are a smaller 6'' as opposed to the 12'' at dinner time. However, I think the serving size is just right. You don't want to eat yourself into a food coma and miss out the afternoon lectures.
