The recent renovations at have warranted a thorough review.

As a member of eight consecutive years prior to the upgrades, I was looking at the packed and cramped weights area with the same old mediocre equipment, questioning my loyalty. However, the floor area has since doubled in size, with the introduction of a stretching area, a women's only area, many more cardio machines, and a much larger weights room. On top of this, every piece of equipment is brand new, and they have doubled up on most machines. While you may have to work in with people at peak times, the place has definitely been given a big vitamin boost.

In addition to the new gym area, there are indoor and outdoor pools, and a variety of group fitness classes. These range from tai chi, pilates, and various levels of yoga, to some seriously demanding boxercise, stationary cycling, and "boot camp" session, to name but a few.

There are also half a dozen squash courts. Although some of these could do with a touch up, they serve their purpose for the casual player. Outside you will also find basketball courts-cum-futsal fields, with a regular crowd looking for anyone to join in.

Staff here are genuinely friendly, helpful, and honest. There are no "used-car salesman" tactics that some other gyms are fond of, reeling you in to sign your life away just to have a look at the place. The clientele are just as amicable, and I'm yet to meet any roid freaks who think they own the place. Keep a sharp eye out for Sydney FC as well - they often gear up and train here.

One drawback is the price. I've heard membership for non-students can be a bit steep, so look into it. If you are inclined to use a variety of what's on offer, the value in a full membership is definitely there. As noted, however, there are no long-term commitments, so it's worth a trial.

Overall, I'm satisfied with my renewal. The gym is located on Gymnasium Road, just off Culloden Road, Marsfield. Two-hour free parking is available down the first driveway on the left, just up the hill from the gym itself. See you there!
