The
Macquarie Musical Society has chosen to present
Rent as its third spot for 2017.
Rent is the story of a group of poor artistic types living in New York's East Village. It follows a year in their life including all the dramas, loves and losses in the bohemian New York of the late eighties.
It is a story of falling in love and living for the day in the shadow of the emerging HIV/AIDS epidemic. Winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama and the Tony award for best musical in 1996
Rent has touched many lives since it was written by Jonathan Larson.
The cast of 15 were enthusiastic and energetic in their performances. Zach Selmes has an amazing voice and his rendition of
One Song Glory was powerful and poignant. The comic timing and interplay between Amy Neville as 'Joanne' & narrator 'Mark' (Luke Murphy) added some much needed light relief especially during
Tango: Maureen. 'Angel', 'Mimi' and 'Maureen' were also memorable performances.
Rent deals with some very dark themes and the MacMS production is gritty and sexual, definitely not suitable for children. The costumes and set were simple and effective and the passion of the company was evident especially in the group performances. At times on opening night, the loudness of the music overpowered the voices of some performers. That being said, it was an enjoyable and thought-provoking event.
